David* presented to our service as alcohol dependant, he was working with several supportive services including the Complex Case team in his local authority, local substance misuse services, street outreach and the Probation Service, to name only a few.
David was rough sleeping and he had also started using novel psychoactive substances (NPS) and Crack Cocaine.
David had also previously served several short prison sentences, but unfortunately was homeless again shortly after release.
Due to David’s needs, situation and background, sourcing accommodation was difficult and he faced a series of rejections from providers who could not offer him support. This rejection understandably impacted upon David’s outlook and hope for the future.
David was referred to our programme by his Recovery Worker, where he was provided with a short-term tenancy and a robust support plan.
Partner agencies noted that within a short time the difference in David was ‘remarkable’.
Though David’s behaviour was still challenging at times he received support in dealing with this, alongside support for his physical and mental health needs and activities which helped him spend his day productively doing things he enjoyed.
Professionals involved in David’s care noted that as a result of his time spent in our supported living accommodation, he is now more settled than he has been in years.
Michelle* was placed in our supported living by a local authority team responsible for sourcing her housing.
At this point in time she was drinking alcohol heavily whilst living in temporary accommodation and struggling in the environment. She regularly exhibited highly distressed physical behaviour and neglected her hygiene; at points this behaviour had resulted the police attending the premises.
The local authority team had attempted to house Michelle in neighbouring areas however services were not willing to accept her into supported housing due to the level of risk.
As a team with significant experience managing complex cases, Michelle was provided with extensive support on a daily basis.
This led to her taking steps to address her alcohol use, attending appointments in relation to her mental health and starting to build bridges with her family again, recently visiting her Mum abroad.
